After her start to the 2017 season, Tiany Schuster's theme song for the rest of the year should be "Girl on Fire" by Alicia Keys. The Crum, Texas, cowgirl opened this season by placing second in the average at The National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver and then capturing the win at the Mid-Winter Fair and Rodeo in Lafayette, Louisiana.

The WPRA's No. 1-ranked barrel racer in the world continued her hot streak by winning the first round at San Angelo, Texas last Sunday. Schuster and her extremely talented "dance partner" JSYK Im Famous blitzed the other 240 barrel racers in attendance when they laid down a smoking time of 15.79.

JSYK is a 9-year-old gelding by Famous JR and out Firewater Fueled by Firewater Flit. While Schuster and the talented gelding only joined forces a year ago, the gelding has been setting arena records and winning for quite some time.

"The first round in San Angelo has been good to me both this year and last year," Schuster said. "We took advantage of the exhibitions the day before to help get ourselves familiar with the pen. For JSYK and myself, slack at San Angelo is more like an NBHA Super Show 1D Slot Race loaded with the toughest horses and probably the toughest race of the year anywhere. With I had to make the best run that I could with hopes of placing."

Schuster had a feeling that she would be in the money when JSYK nailed his first barrel.

When I nailed my first, I knew that I would be OK for a check," Schuster said. "JSYK had his great honest, typical Firewater Flit-style second barrel, and when we got to the third, he skimmed around it so close that I eeked to myself praying we didn't knock it over. We got around it and when the announcer announced my time of 15.79 I was like 'Finally, a major win!'
With San Angelo slack being one of the saltiest barrel races of the season, it takes a horse with a winning style and mentality to come out on top. Schuster explained that JSYK is a very reliable horse and by just being around the tall gelding, you can sense the air of a winner.

"He walks around like a winner and pins his ears at every other horse letting them know he is the boss, and I am good with that!" she said. "I love a guy that is the boss and can handle things, and I have enough to handle getting to the rodeos."

Although it is only the start of the 2017 season, Schuster is relieved to be doing so well so early in the year. She rodeoed a little last year, starting late, and then JSYK got hurt.

"I didn't have the horse that I needed after he had gotten hurt last year so we went home," Schuster said. "We didn't want to burn our other horses out chasing last hole so we thought we better come home and regroup."

Schuster admits that the rodeo trail is hard and that the key to success is staying positive and encouraging not only to yourself but also your competition.

"Everyone needs to be happy and support one another," she said. "I am also very fortunate that my boyfriend of nearly 10 years, Edwin, is in the truck with me this year to help keep my spirits high when things don't go as planned. A valuable support team both on and off the road is important, and while Edwin is my support on the road, Wade Whatley is my support off the road."

Schuster wishes to give some advice to other barrel races who have their sights set on qualifying to the WNFR in December.

"You need to have that 'special' horse," she said. "If you are not sure that horse of yours is special, sell it. Stop wasting your time and money on horses that will never make it. Let go and stop making excuses for losers. It is hard to grasp that and I am just as guilty as the next person for holding onto a horse longer than needed but once you ride that great son-of-a-gun, you will understand!"
