Throwback: Guymon Pioneer Days Kickin' It Old School In The Team Roping
There's nothing more old-school than running fresh muleys in from the pasture & saying "have at'em." So that's just what Guymon Pioneer Days decided to do.
Drop your tip a little lower cowboy, the Guymon Pioneer Days Rodeo is having a good, old-fashioned muley team roping. Guymon is known for its old-school values during their “pioneer days”-themed event, but this year they are really throwing it back with their muley team roping.
For the first time since 2007, the rodeo committee has decided to run in not just hornless steers but fresh, chute-run muleys that could throw anything at the PRCA team ropers who have headed to the Henry C. Hitch Pioneer Arena in Guymon, Oklahoma, this week.
“This might be the most exciting thing going on in Guymon for Pioneer Days this year,” Guymon Pioneer Days production manager Ken Stonecipher told Ted Harbin of twisTEDrodeo.com. “As one spectator put it, ‘Muley roping separates the real cowboys from the rest of the field.’”
Competitors have already had their first shot at the muleys during the first round of slack yesterday. Three-time world champion Clay Tryan and nine-time WNFR qualifier Travis Graves took the round one win with a 7.1-second run on the dead-fresh cattle.
Some may get easier to rope now, but others will hold true to their breed and simply remain untamed.
“There’s something wild and unpredictable with these cattle,” Stonecipher told twisTEDrodeo.com. “It’s truly our Western heritage. We’re bringing fresh steers in off the pasture and roping them for the first time.”
The next round of slack is underway this morning, with the top 40 advancing to the performances that run May 4-6. View full results from the 2018 Guymon Pioneer Days Rodeo as they come in HERE.
