'I Have To Step Up When My Name Is Called' - Shane Hanchey On Winning The 2019 Canadian Title
The 2019 Canadian Finals Rodeo was not going the way it was supposed to for Shane Hanchey. The reigning, and three-time Canadian champion was struggling through his week in Red Deer, Alberta, and it didn't look like he would be taking home a fourth title this year.
Until round five.
The fans at Westerner Park finally got the see the Shane Hanchey they'd grown accustomed to when he jumped out and made a 7.3-second run. A run that meant maybe - and that was a big maybe - he still had a chance at the Canadian title.
Hanchey sat in his hotel room watching football, thinking about the big-time players that will be immortalized for their never-failing determination to win, and ability to come through under extreme pressure.
'I just figured if I want to be a guy that people talk about when my rodeo career is done, then I have to step up with my name is called," said Hanchey.
And step up he did. With a run of 7.2 seconds, Hanchey was able to win the final round, the aggregate and his fourth Canadian title.
