We asked Edgar Durazo from Moctezuma, Mexico to picture what it would be like to win a Canadian title several times, but until it happened, he couldn't fully imagine how he would feel about winning the highest title in a country that he had called home for the past six years. He talked about the people that had welcomed him with open arms, the friendships he gained on the rodeo trail, the bulls he would have to conquer, but when the title was finally his, there was one thing he had to say about how it felt: "Way better," said Durazo. The crowd held nothing back when the first-ever Mexican-born qualifier entered the CFR arena, and he gave them good reason to cheer too. Durazo swept rounds one through three and only missed winning the fourth round by one point. Those wins, combined with placing in the other two rounds and a second-place finish in the average, sealed the deal for Durazo and allowed him to walk out at the 2019 Canadian Champion Bull Rider.
The 2019 Canadian Finals Rodeo was not going the way it was supposed to for Shane Hanchey. The reigning, and three-time Canadian champion was struggling through his week in Red Deer, Alberta, and it didn't look like he would be taking home a fourth title this year. Until round five. The fans at Westerner Park finally got the see the Shane Hanchey they'd grown accustomed to when he jumped out and made a 7.3-second run. A run that meant maybe - and that was a big maybe - he still had a chance at the Canadian title. Hanchey sat in his hotel room watching football, thinking about the big-time players that will be immortalized for their never-failing determination to win, and ability to come through under extreme pressure. 'I just figured if I want to be a guy that people talk about when my rodeo career is done, then I have to step up with my name is called," said Hanchey. And step up he did. With a run of 7.2 seconds, Hanchey was able to win the final round, the aggregate and his fourth Canadian title.
First time's the charm for the 2019 Canadian Champion Barrel Racer Brooke Wills who took home the title on her first trip to the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Red Deer, Alberta. Wills started off her rookie appearance at the CFR by knocking down two barrels, but the first-time jitters didn't last long. After round one knocked her down in the aggregate race, Wills let it all hang out and never failed to pick up a round check again through the rest of the finals. Back-to-back wins in rounds four and five meant that come championship Sunday, she had worked herself back into Canadian title contention. She may have been at her first Canadian Finals, but she showed veteran talent under pressure when she managed to place second in the final round, move up to fifth in the aggregate, and ultimately earn enough to win the 2019 Canadian Barrel Racing title.
He was the 2016 world champion, multi-time Calgary Stampede champion, he's won Houston, and just about any large rodeo you can think of, but he's been after the Canadian title since he was a kid and has finally checked his home country's highest honor off of his bucket list. Not only did Zeke Thurston win the 2019 Canadian Saddle Bronc Riding title, but he made sure of it by running away with the competition. Thurston came into the 2019 Canadian Finals Rodeo with a $25,000 lead over the nearest competition, and continue to extend that lead all week by placing in every round, winning two go-rounds, the aggregate and breaking the single-season earnings record by over $3,000 with a total of $110,785.68 in earnings this year. Watch Thurston dominate his way through the six rounds of saddle bronc riding competition below:
